W ho can reach youth better than youth themselves? When it comes to sharing news about youth issues and topics, the youth of today know how to get the message out! Youth blogs and newslet- ters give youth the chance to spread news their own way, while also expressing some creativity and bettering their writing skills. Although newspapers may be a thing of the past, thousands of blog and news posts are being shared all over social media every day. New Brunswick's youth of Kennebecasis Valley are making great use of this platform with their youth blog OasisEdge. The Kennebecasis Valley Youth Centre is a non-profit organization that opened in November 2016 in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. Their mission? "To provide safe, comfortable, accessible, multifaceted and stigma-free spaces in which to promote activities and programs which enhance and develop youth and families within [their] community." KV Oasis provides assistance for youth in many areas. They offer tutoring, a free health clinic and mental health services such as therapy dogs! Their youth blog OasisEdge took off at the beginning of 2018 and has been growing ever since. Oasis Edge is an online newspaper for youth, written by youth, covering topics of interest and having an impact on youth! The writers of these articles are engaged young people who have an interest in sharing stories and opinions with others. Topics range from local, provincial, national and global news to sports and advice. The team has an "Ask Oasis" column and a "Sex Q&A" column which answers anony- mous readers questions. The team can assist youth with their questions and issues directly and even point them in the direction of the correct resources. So what are youth interested in reading? Aside from local news and advice, the team writes reviews of movies, comedy shows, musicals/plays and new businesses opening in the area. Some writers share helpful tips to benefit other youth such as "5 Tips for a Great Resume." Others share stories of inspiration or opinion. Hearing these creative opinions of youth is beneficial to youth and adult readers alike. OasisEdge.com also has a "Youth in Action" section that showcases youth who are making a difference in their communities and achieving great successes! The blog is an all-around celebration of youth and a display of what youth can accomplish when given the opportunity. Youth who write for the site even get compensated for their work based on how many views the article gets, pushing them to work hard at what they produce. Hearing directly from young people is a unique platform that has certainly become successful in such a short time. Check out www.oasisedge.com to read some of the amazing work by the youth of Kennebecasis Valley and learn how to join! EXTRA EXTRA: Read all about these youth! 8
