The new Medal for Volunteers recognizes Canadians who have made a sig- nificant, sustained and unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. The inaugural presentation ceremony will take place during this year's National Volunteer Week (April 10-16, 2016). As an official Canadian honour, the Medal incorpo- rates and replaces the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award, created in 1995, by then-Governor General the Right Honourable Roméo LeBlanc. The Medal builds on the legacy and spirit of the Caring Canadian Award by honouring the dedication and commitment of volunteers. Meritorious Service Decorations (Civil Division) are given to recognize remarkable contributions in many different fields of endeavour, from advocacy initiatives and health care services, to research and humanitarian efforts. Often innovative, these deeds or activities set an example for others to follow, improve the quality of life of a community and bring benefit or honour to Canada. For example, past recipients have tackled poverty in their community, improved education opportunities for children in Canada and abroad, or raised awareness of important causes and issues.
