T o celebrate their 20th Anniversary last year, The Kemptville Youth Centre created a Legacy Tree in order to acknowledge and honour the people who had been a part of the organi- zation since it began. Unveiled on July 12, 2014 the wall-mounted mural has been signed by many since. The tree was created out of two layers of MDF by staff, youth and volunteers with very thick strong roots for the founding fathers and mothers of KYC to sign their names. Volunteers, donors or staff who have helped throughout the years signed their names and the year they began at the Centre. The branches are signed by current volunteers and staff; the leaves by youth, and the blossoms are signed by former youth that have come back to pay it forward as a staff, volunteer or donor. Here's where it gets a little sentimental. Youth and staff created a time capsule message and wrote it onto the back of the tree trunk before it was painted and attached to the wall telling the story of what the tree means and who worked on it. The leaves and the blossoms also have time capsule messages by each person and are velcroed into place so they can be taken off to read at times. Pictures of former youth who have passed away are mounted on either side of the tree to remember them and their part of the KYC Legacy. When visitors come by who used to play a part in the Life of the Centre or when new youth wants to sign a leaf, a gold coloured Sharpie that stays nestled in the crook of the tree is presented and they join those who have contributed so much over the years. "If you have played a part in making KYC what it is today, you are invited to drop by today for a visit, to tell your story and sign the KYC Legacy Tree." invited Robin Heald, executive director of the KYC, "we'd love to hear from you again." w w w . y o u t h c e n t r e s c a n a d a . c o m 19 Honours its Connection to the Community By Robin Heald
