Since LCYC in Saskatchewan began a new program called Teen Talk! The Teen Talk Program is an educational program where community "mentors" visit LCYC and hold presentations on their area of expertise! This includes members of the community such as nurses, social workers, and workers from the sexual assault center. The guest speakers will complete their presentations, engage the youth in a discussion on the subject and then there will be lots of fun activities for the youth to exercise what they've learned. Last year's Teen Talk Program was a huge success, with guest speakers hailing from Synergy Credit Union, Rotary Club, Streetscapes, Prairie North Health Region, Lloydminster Sexual Assault and Information Centre, Lloydminster Interval Home Society, and many other members of the community who came out to speak to teens on various issues. Some topics covered were healthy relationships, online safety, body image, drug awareness, community involvement, and bullying. After the talks, the youth got a chance to enjoy activities outside of the centre, including swimming, mini-golf, bowling, and going out for ice-cream. This year's Teen Talk program is sure to be action packed with tons of exciting guest speakers from all over the area. This program is at no cost to the youth to attend, and all meals and snacks will be provided! To find information on upcoming Teen Talks, simply call LCYC at 306-825-3113. You can also see what's coming up at the centre, and sign-up sheets will be posted there in advance as well. Information is also available on LCYC's website. All participating youth must submit a signed waiver, which can also be downloaded from their website! Teen Talks will be happening multiple times a month, so if you miss one, don't worry! You'll be able to catch the next one. This is an excellent opportunity for youth to become engaged in their community and realize where their interests may lie. The Teen Talk program will get youth thinking about their futures and which life skills they would like to develop. LCYC's Outreach Coordinator says "the program will help the youth learn more and deal with relevant issues they face on a daily basis in a constructive and safe environment." Teens will be informed about the various things going on in their community, relevant social issues and will get to meet lots of interesting people! This community oriented program will help build the foundation for a community minded generation of youth who will help build and improve their community one step at a time.
