O n October 7th, 2017 Citizens from Grande Prairie and area came together to unveil the Afghanistan War Monument & dedicate the land it sits on. We paid tribute to all 158 who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Afghanistan War and paid special tribute to 4 fallen who have connections to Grande Prairie: • From the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, Master Corporal Raymond Arndt, Corporal Joshua Baker, Corporal Zachary McCormack • From 2 PPCLI, Master Corporal Timothy Wilson, born in Grande Prairie In attendance at the event were the Commanding officer of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, Lt Col Jonathon McCully, Captain Rick Dumas LER, Chaplain Pasolli LER, Shaun Peterson; Regimental WO PPCLI, The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Band, the Grande Prairie Pipe & Drum Band, MP Chris Warkentin, MLA Wayne Drysdale, Incumbent Mayor of Grande Prairie, Bill Given, County of Grande Prairie No 1, Chief Superintendent John Ferguson, RCMP, Deputy Fire Chief Janine Saastad, Col Ret'd John Conrad (Representing Darcia Arndt, MCpl Raymond Arndt), the Middleton Family (Cpl Josh Baker), the McCormack Family (Cpl Zach McCormack), Rod Wilson, Cousin (MCpl Timothy Wilson) Colour Guard provided by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #54 with representation from several Peace region branches, Air Cadet Squadron 577, 2850 Army Cadets, Barry "Brutus" Drews, National Sgt at Arms for the Canadian Army Motorcycle Units National Headquarters and ANAVETS #389. president Jon Bartlett, executive members Don Sharp and Lorne Scobe. Renee Charbonneau, a National C.A.V. member and the project founder and lead was not only the event organizer but she also emceed the event. After the ceremony, there was a community social that gave citizens the opportunity to meet our silver cross families and members of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. Following that was a sponsors and dignitaries dinner. Brandt Tractor sponsored the dinners for 30 air and 30 army cadets to be in attendance. Grande Prairie Army Cadets 2850 have amongst their midst the Top Marksmen and the Top Cadet in Canada! Dave Sopha of the Portraits of Honour sent us one of his copy canvases so that our fallen could be with us at dinner and we thank him deeply for that. The day and evening were a tremendous success.
