APPLYING FOR Scholarships? Applying for scholarships can be stressful, especially with the added stress of school work and applying to post-secondary. But it will all be worth it when you graduate with a lower student loan debt! Here are some tips and information to help you apply this year: APPLY EARLY You want to make sure that you get applications in on time, so the best way to do that is to start applying early. Some deadlines are months before you even apply to post-secondary or even graduate high school! So make sure you know your deadlines. APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS THAT REPRESENT WHO YOU ARE There are a lot of scholarships out there to suit everyone's interests, you just have to dig for it! Applying for something based on your interests will come naturally and help with your application. Look for scholarships from your high school, workplace, community and post-secondary school. You can find some great scholarships locally! Yours or your parents' place of work may offer scholarships to employees and their children. Your high school or post-secondary school may also offer scholarships for their students. Check out local websites to see what is offered near you. ASK FOR REFERENCE LETTERS AND HELP WITH ESSAYS Ask for references from teachers and mentors who you've worked with in some way. Make sure it's someone you trust and who knows your skills and abilities. Ask English teachers and guidance counsellors for help with applications and essays. RESEARCH FOR SCHOLARSHIPS ALL YEAR ROUND AND SET REMINDERS TO APPLY Deadlines for scholarships vary so make sure you know when to apply! DON'T FORGET TO APPLY FOR THE SMALLER SCHOLARSHIPS Many students go for the larger scholarships, leaving fewer applicants for the smaller ones! APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT REQUIRE MORE WORK More work means fewer applicants which betters your chances at winning the scholarship! Sign up for some websites that match you with scholarships appli- cable to you and help you find a range of funding opportunities: Scholarshipscanada.ca Yconic.com Fundyourfuture.ca FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES: Canada's Luckiest Student Student Life Network offers a contest each year where one student wins a prize bundle worth $100,000. To earn the most prizes you must sign up and register for each prize. If not all prizes are claimed by one student there will be individual winners for each contest. The contest ends in May but it also runs every year, so sign up and play along! You could be the next winner. http://cls6.studentlifenetwork.com/ The Loran Scholars Foundation The Loran Scholars Foundation chooses 34 young Canadians to become Loran Scholars each year. These scholars are funded through their undergraduate careers at a value of $100 000. They also offer other opportunities such as summer internships and mentorship. Since over 4000 students apply they also choose 104 individuals to receive $5000 finalist awards or $2000 provincial awards. If you are a person who possesses integrity, courage, grit and personal autonomy, consider applying! The deadline is October of each year. www.loranscholar.ca RBC Students Leading Change Scholarship RBC recognizes students who not only invest in their education but also in their communities.
